The 40th Anniversary edition of Jethro Tull’s Minstrel In The Gallery. The album has been expanded to include the b-side Summerday Sands, several studio outtakes, and alternate session material recorded for a BBC broadcast. The second disc features a live recording of Jethro Tull performing at the Olympia in Paris on July 5, 1975, a few months prior to the release of Minstrel In The Gallery. During the show, the band played songs from several of its albums, including War Child and Aqualung, as well as an early performance of Minstrel In The Gallery. It was mixed to 5.1 & stereo by by King Crimson guitarist Jakko Jakszyk.
Highlights from the set include:
* Original album plus seven bonus tracks (six previously unreleased), two mixed to 5.1 surround, and all to stereo by Steven Wilson
* Flat transfers of the original LP mix at 96/24 plus additional track Summerday Sands
* Flat transfer of the original quad mix of the LP plus additional track Summerday Sands
* An eight and a half minute film of the band performing Minstrel In The Gallery in Paris from 1975

Minstrel in the Gallery was Tull’s most artistically successful and elaborately produced album since Thick as a Brick and harkened back to that album with the inclusion of a 17-minute extended piece (“Baker Street Muse”). Although English folk elements abound, this is really a hard rock showcase on a par with — and perhaps even more aggressive than — anything on Aqualung. The title track is a superb showcase for the group, freely mixing folk melodies, lilting flute passages, and archaic, pre-Elizabethan feel, and the fiercest electric rock in the group’s history — parts of it do recall phrases from A Passion Play, but all of it is more successful than anything on War Child. Martin Barre’s attack on the guitar is as ferocious as anything in the band’s history, and John Evan’s organ matches him amp for amp, while Barriemore Barlow and Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond hold things together in a furious performance. Anderson’s flair for drama and melody come to the fore in “Cold Wind to Valhalla,” and “Requiem” is the loveliest acoustic number in Tull’s repertory, featuring nothing but Anderson’s singing and acoustic guitar, Hammond-Hammond’s bass, and a small string orchestra backing them. “Nothing at All” isn’t far behind for sheer, unabashed beauty, but “Black Satin Dancer” is a little too cacophonous for its own good. “Baker Street Muse” recalls Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play, not only in its structure but a few passages; at slightly under 17 minutes, it’s a tad more manageable than either of its conceptual predecessors, and it has all of their virtues, freely overlapping hard rock and folk material, classical arrangements (some of the most tasteful string playing on a Tull recording), surprising tempo shifts, and complex stream-of-consciousness lyrics (some of which clearly veer into self-parody) into a compelling whole. –Bruce Eder, AllMusic

Genesis founding member Anthony Phillips has his 1977 debut album The Geese and the Ghost reissued as a deluxe 2CD+DVD set in March. The album has been newly re-mastered (from the original tapes) by Simon Heyworth and comes with a bonus CD of demos and early versions of the tracks from the album, as well as two previously unreleased songs from 1973 (Silver Song and Only Your Love) that feature Phil Collins as a vocalist. Even better, the DVD includes a new 5.1 surround sound mix of the album (by Andy Myles and Simon Heyworth) and everything is packaged in a smart clamshell box, which also finds room for an illustrated booklet with new essay by Jonathan Dann. This three-disc ‘definitive edition’ of The Geese & the Ghost will be released on 9 March 2015 via Esoteric Recordings.

Anthony Phillips’ first post-Genesis solo album was an extension of the pseudo-medieval folk elements found on Trespass, the last of his Genesis albums. Much of this recording sounds like a lost Genesis album, understandable since Phil Collins does a lot of the singing, and Michael Rutherford is present on guitar, bass, and keyboards, and also shares composer credits with him on major parts of this album. Portions of the material here, in fact, seem to have been derived from pieces they composed together in Genesis’ early days that proved unsuitable for performance on-stage. Thus, The Geese & the Ghost comes off as a sort of throwback, picking up stylistically where Trespass or Nursery Cryme (check out the second part of the title track) left off nearly six years earlier. “Henry: Portraits from Tudor Times” can still hold the patient listener’s attention, as it moves from bold synthesizer-generated fanfares to intimate classical guitar passages into soaring movements for electric guitar, flute, and oboe no less (there are three flutists here, plus one violinist, two cellists, and a pair of oboists, Bob Phillips and Laza Momulovich, who often get placed very prominently in the mix, probably a first on a rock album) — but these movements would work better if they weren’t quite so repetitive. The 15-minute two-part title track is hopeless — gorgeous, luscious, languid, and utterly pointless in terms of presenting ideas of any worth or resolving them in any serious way; this is the sort of material that first-year composition students turn in as exercises, but only in the fading glow of the prog rock boom would it see the light of day on a commercial release. It’s very arty in an early-’70s manner, midway between early Genesis and Amazing Blondel (note that neither of those groups still existed in their progressive rock incarnations in 1977), without the vibrancy that the former could generate or the impressive musical language or vocalizing of the latter. What Phillips failed to recognize, or couldn’t emulate, was the fact that Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, and other bigger-than-footnote prog rock outfits always made sure their music was exciting, as well as pretty and complex. Still, it is pretty, and the CD reissue (which is devoid of instrumental credits) has a demo, “Master of Time,” as a bonus. That song, a fey mix of sci-fi and faux-medieval sensibilities, never made the final cut of the album, and the demo runs two minutes too long for its own good, but it is sung by Phillips solo (he doesn’t have much of a voice, hardly an octave range to judge from this) in a passionate manner, and is played — on acoustic and electric guitars, with piano and no classical musicians added — with some effort at excitement and vibrancy. –Bruce Eder

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 00:44:20 minutes | 0,97 GB | Genre: Rock, Hard Rock

Recorded: January to March 1969 at De Lane Lea Studios, London.

This is a record that even those who aren’t Deep Purple fans can listen to two or three times in one sitting — but then, this wasn’t much like any other album that the group ever issued. Actually, Deep Purple was highly prized for many years by fans of progressive rock, and for good reason. The group was going through a transition — original lead singer Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper would be voted out of the lineup soon after the album was finished (although they weren’t told about it until three months later), organist Jon Lord and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore having perceived limitations in their work in terms of where each wanted to take the band. And between Lord’s ever-greater ambitions toward fusing classical and rock and Blackmore’s ever-bolder guitar attack, both of which began to coalesce with the session for Deep Purple in early 1969, the group managed to create an LP that combined heavy metal’s early, raw excitement, intensity, and boldness with progressive rock’s complexity and intellectual scope, and virtuosity on both levels. On “The Painter,” “Why Didn’t Rosemary?,” and, especially, “Bird Has Flown,” they strike a spellbinding balance between all of those elements, and Evans’ work on the latter is one of the landmark vocal performances in progressive rock. “April,” a three-part suite with orchestral accompaniment, is overall a match for such similar efforts by the Nice as the “Five Bridges Suite,” and gets extra points for crediting its audience with the patience for a relatively long, moody developmental section and for including a serious orchestral interlude that does more than feature a pretty tune, exploiting the timbre of various instruments as well as the characteristics of the full ensemble. Additionally, the band turns in a very successful stripped-down, hard rock version of Donovan’s “Lalena,” with an organ break that shows Lord’s debt to modern jazz as well as classical training. In all, amid all of those elements — the orchestral accompaniment, harpsichord embellishments, and backward organ and drum tracks — Deep Purple holds together astonishingly well as a great body of music. This is one of the most bracing progressive rock albums ever, and a successful vision of a musical path that the group might have taken but didn’t. Ironically, the group’s American label, Tetragrammaton Records, which was rapidly approaching bankruptcy, released this album a lot sooner than EMI did in England, but ran into trouble over the use of the Hieronymus Bosch painting “The Garden of Earthly Delights” on the cover; although it has been on display at the Vatican, the work was wrongly perceived as containing profane images and never stocked as widely in stores as it might’ve been. –Bruce Eder

The usual perception of early Deep Purple is that it was a band with a lot of potential in search of a direction. And that might be true of their debut LP, put together in three days of sessions in May of 1968, but it’s still a hell of an album. From the opening bars of “And the Address,” it’s clear that they’d gotten down the fundamentals of heavy metal from day one, and at various points the electricity and the beat just surge forth in ways that were startlingly new in the summer of 1968. Ritchie Blackmore never sounded less at ease as a guitarist than he does on this album, and the sound mix doesn’t exactly favor the heavier side of his playing, but the rhythm section of Nick Simper and Ian Paice rumble forward, and Jon Lord’s organ flourishes, weaving classical riffs, and unexpected arabesques into “I’m So Glad,” which sounds rather majestic here. “Hush” was the number that most people knew at the time (it was a hit single in America), and it is a smooth, crunchy interpretation of the Joe South song. But nobody could have been disappointed with the rest of this record — one can even hear the very distant origins of “Smoke on the Water” in “Mandrake Root,” once one gets past the similarities to Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady”; by the song’s extended finale, they sound more like the Nice. Their version of “Help” is one of the more interesting reinterpretations of a Beatles song, as a slow, rough-textured dirge. “Hey Joe” is a bit overblown, and the group clearly had to work a bit at both songwriting and their presentation, but one key attribute that runs through most of this record — even more so than the very pronounced heaviness of the playing — is a spirit of fun; these guys are obviously having the time of their lives rushing through their limited repertoire, and it’s infectious to the listener; it gives this record much more of a ’60s feel than we’re accustomed to hearing from this band. –Bruce Eder

Several months after the innovative remake of “You Keep Me Hanging On,” England’s answer to Vanilla Fudge, was this early version of Deep Purple, which featured vocalist Rod Evans, and bassist Nick Simper, along with mainstays Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. This, their second album, followed on the heels of “Hush,” a dynamic arrangement of a Joe South tune, far removed from the flavor of one of his own hits, “Walk a Mile in My Shoes.” Four months later, this album’s cover of Neil Diamond’s Top 25, 1967 gem “Kentucky Woman,” went Top 40 for Deep Purple. Also like Vanilla Fudge, the group’s own originals were creative, thought-provoking, but not nearly as interesting as their take on cover tunes. Vanilla Fudge did “Eleanor Rigby,” and Deep Purple respond by going inside “We Can Work It Out” — it falls out of nowhere after the progressive rock jam “Exposition,” Ritchie Blackmore’s leads zipping in between Rod Evans smooth and precise vocals. As Vanilla Fudge was progressively leaning more towards psychedelia, here Deep Purple are the opposite. The boys claim to be inspired by the Bard of King Arthur’s court in Camelot, Taliesyn. John Vernon Lord, under the art direction of Les Weisbrich, paints a superb wonderland on the album jacket, equal to the madness of Hieronymous Bosch’s cover painting used for the third album. Originals “The Shield” and “Anthem” make early Syd Barrett Pink Floyd appear punk in comparison. Novel sounds are aided by Lord’s dominating keyboards, a signature of this group.

Though “The Anthem” is more intriguing than the heavy metal thunder of Machine Head, it is overwhelmed by the majesty of their “River Deep, Mountain High” cover, definitely not the inspiration for the Supremes and Four Tops 1971 hit version. By the time 1972 came around, Deep Purple immersed themselves in dumb lyrics, unforgettable riffs, and a huge presence, much like Black Sabbath. The evolution from progressive to hard rock was complete, but a combination of what they did here — words that mattered matched by innovative musical passages — would have been a more pleasing combination. Vanilla Fudge would cut Donovan’s “Season of the Witch,” Deep Purple followed this album by covering his “Lalena”; both bands abandoned the rewrites their fans found so fascinating. Rod Evans voice was subtle enough to take “River Deep, Mountain High” to places Ian Gillam might have demolished. –Joe Viglione

The first solo record of Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper, released in 1975, introduced the world to Cooper’s hard rocking, dark theatrics. The album hit #5 on the Billboard Chart and yielded three hit singles: “Only Women Bleed,” “Department of Youth,” and “Welcome to My Nightmare.”

With the 1974 disintegration of the original Alice Cooper group, Alice was free to launch a solo career. He wisely decided to re-enlist the services of Bob Ezrin for his solo debut, Welcome to My Nightmare, which was a concept album tied into the story line of the highly theatrical concert tour he launched soon after the album’s release. While the music lost most of the gritty edge of the original AC lineup, Welcome to My Nightmare remains Alice’s best solo effort — while some tracks stray from his expected hard rock direction, there’s plenty of fist-pumping rock to go around. The disco-flavored, album-opening title track would be reworked on the stage as more of a hard rock tune, while “Some Folks” dips into cabaret territory, and “Only Women Bleed” is a sensitive ballad that became a Top Ten hit. But the rockers serve as the album’s foundation — “Devil’s Food,” “The Black Widow,” “Department of Youth,” and “Cold Ethyl” are all standouts, as is the more tranquil yet eerie epic “Steven.” Despite this promising start to Cooper’s solo career, the majority of his subsequent releases were often not as focused and were of varying quality. –Greg Prato

Surfing with the Alien belongs to its era like Are You Experienced? belongs to its own — perhaps it doesn’t transcend its time the way the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s 1967 debut does, but Joe Satriani’s 1987 breakthrough can be seen as the gold standard for guitar playing of the mid- to late ’80s, an album that captures everything that was good about the glory days of shred. Certainly, Satriani was unique among his peers in that his playing was so fluid that his technical skills never seemed like showboating — something that was somewhat true of his 1986 debut, Not of This Earth, but on Surfing with the Alien he married this dexterity to a true sense of melodic songcraft, a gift that helped him be that rare thing: a guitar virtuoso who ordinary listeners enjoyed.
Nowhere is this more true than on “Always with Me, Always with You,” a genuine ballad — not beefed up with muscular power chords but rather sighing gently with its melody — but this knack was also evident on the ZZ Top homage “Satch Boogie” and the title track itself, both of which turned into rock radio hits. This melodic facility, plus his fondness for a good old-fashioned three-chord rock, separated Satriani from his shredding peers in 1987, many of whom were quite literally his students. But he was no throwback: he equaled his former students Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett in sweep picking and fretboard acrobatics and he had a sparkling, spacy quality to some of his songs — particularly the closing stretch of the Middle Eastern-flavored “Lords of Karma,” the twinkling “Midnight,” and “Echo” — that was thoroughly modern for 1987. The production of Surfing with the Alien is also thoroughly of its year — stiff drumbeats, sparkling productions — so much so that it can seem a bit like a relic from another era, but it’s fine that it doesn’t transcend its time: it captures the best of its era and is still impressive in that regard.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96kHz  | Time – 00:35:14 minutes | 766 MB | Genre: Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | © Casablanca Records / The Island Def Jam Music Group
Recorded: October–November 1973; April 1974 (‘Kissin’ Time’) at Bell Sound Studios, New York City

Kiss is the debut album by the legendary hard rock band KISS. Most of the material on the album was written by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, and it was produced by Kenny Kerner and Richie Wise. The album was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City. While it sold few copies at first, Kiss eventually would go on to sell over 500,000 copies and be certified Gold by the RIAA.

Kiss’ 1974 self-titled debut is one of hard rock’s all-time classic studio recordings. Kiss is chock full of their best and most renowned compositions, containing elements of Rolling Stones/New York Dolls party-hearty rock & roll, Beatles tunefulness, and Sabbath/Zep heavy metal, and wisely recorded primal and raw by producers Richie Wise and Kenny Kerner (of Gladys Knight fame). Main songwriters Stanley and Simmons each had a knack for coming up with killer melodies and riffs, as evidenced by “Nothin’ to Lose” and “Deuce” (by Simmons), “Firehouse” and “Black Diamond” (by Stanley), as well as “Strutter” and “100,000 Years” (collaborations by the two). Also included is the Ace Frehley alcohol anthem “Cold Gin,” “Let Me Know” (a song that Stanley played for Simmons upon their very first meeting, then titled “Sunday Driver”), and one of Kiss’ few instrumentals: the groovy “Love Theme from Kiss” (penned by the entire band). The only weak track is a tacky cover of the 1959 Bobby Rydell hit “Kissin’ Time,” which was added to subsequent pressings of the album to tie in with a “Kissing Contest” promotion the band was involved in at the time. Along with 1976’s Destroyer, Kiss’ self-titled debut is their finest studio album, and has only improved over the years. –AllMusic Review by Greg Prato
